The purpose of the Certificate in Healthcare Systems Engineering is to provide students and working healthcare professionals an introduction to fundamental skills in industrial and systems engineering and a background in healthcare delivery systems and processes. Individuals completing the certificate program will be better positioned to apply systems engineering knowledge and skills to improve overall quality,streamline processes and improve efficiency in healthcare systems. Upon completion of the certificate program, students have the option of applying to the Healthcare Systems Engineering Master of Engineering degree program and applying the 12 certificate credits towards the 30-credit Master’s degree.
Admissions Requirements:
University admissions criteria for non-degree graduate students are:
1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with an overall grade point average of at least 3.0. Applicants with an undergraduate
GPA below 3.0 may be admitted with the approval of the department in which they wish to take courses.
2.Evidence that the applicant is presently a student in good standing in an appropriate graduate program at an accredited institution.
3.Evidence that the applicant has received an appropriate graduate or other advanced degree from an accredited institution.
International students are required to demonstrate English language skills equal to those required of degree-seeking students in the College.
All international applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL (Please see section 4 below.).
Students should be quantitatively oriented and have completed a calculus based probability and statistics course at the level of ISE 121 or
MATH 231,(that is also covered by ISE 328). Students should also have completed engineering mathematics courses, which incorporates
elements of linear algebra and numerical methods at the level of MATH 205, and fundamental elements of operations research at the level of
ISE 240 (that are also covered by ISE 357).
Students who have been working for several years, or may not have the expected background, may be required to take refresher mathematics
and/or statistic course(s) (e.g. ISE 328 and/or ISE 357) before starting the program to ensure they have the required mathematics and statistics
No graduate entrance exams are required.
The language requirements for foreign students are consistent with the RCEAS standards, which currently are:
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) minimum composite score of 79 (iBT)
TOEFL subtest scores: Writing – 20, Speaking – 15, Reading – 20, Listening – 20.
Any student with one or more individual skill section scores below these targets will be required to take an English as a Second Language
(ESL) course or lab work during the initial academic year, concurrent with their regular department coursework.
Any student with two or more skill section scores below these targets, and a composite score below 79, will be required to attend the StepUp
Intensive English Program at Lehigh.

The Healthcare Systems Engineering certificate program is comprised of 12 credit hours of coursework. The credits/courses by area are as
6 credit hours of Healthcare Systems Courses (select 2 of the following):
• Introduction to Healthcare Systems (ISE 470)
Quality and Process Improvement in Healthcare (ISE 471)
• Financial Management in Healthcare (ISE 472)
• Information Technology in Healthcare (ISE 473)
6 credit hours of Industrial and Systems Engineering Courses (select 2 of the following):
• Stochastic Models and Applications (ISE 339)
• Game Theory (ISE 358)
• Simulation (ISE 404)
• Design of Experiments (ISE 410)
• Optimization Models and Applications (ISE 426)
All courses listed are offered through Distance Learning.
