IMPROVING THE SYSTEMS OF CARE
As a hospitalist, I'm not only interested in the care of the patient in front of me, but also in the healthcare system that provides care to all my patients. Healthcare is a complex system that does not consistently provide value to its users. While at my previous hospital, I became increasingly involved in efforts to improve the systems of care, thereby improving value. I was fortunate to have involvement as an early physician adopter and leader in Lean efforts. In my role at Coordinated Health, I continue to identify ways the system can work better. After speaking with a colleague who works at the Mayo Clinic and obtained a Healthcare Systems Engineering degree, I began to look into programs. I chose Lehigh because of its history of excellence in engineering. The program has refined my approach to systems issues and expanded my toolkit to handle those issues. I hope to be able to use these tools to continue to improve systems of care and provide a physician's perspective in these efforts.
